Mostly Sober October is Complete!
Good morning and welcome to November you beautiful people. Guess what?
Mostly Sober October is complete and I am tired. And I did it. The goal was to run 200 miles and do 3,500 push-ups during the month of October… Final results are:
226.3/200 miles
4,330/3,500 push-ups
Boooo Yaaaa – on top of that I decided to (mostly) cut alcohol out of my life for the month.
Let me explain the “mostly”. I am not a sadist. There were a few events this month for which I gave myself a pass. Three days out of the month did include a bit of alcohol and the celebrations were very worthy of said pass (a wedding, my own wedding anniversary, and Valtesse, look it up). All the same though, that is 28 days out of 31 without alcohol and a truly ass-kicking fitness routine (at least for me).
The 200 miles thing began as a mistake. I did my math wrong and meant to put 100 miles up there (aiming for about 25 a week). I realized the mistake right when I published the original goals and decided to say fuck-it. 200 miles it is. And here we are… My wife thinks my ass looks a lot better. There were many a run I had to force myself into and through and they were totally worth it. I am mainly worried I set the bar too high for next year’s Sober October. It is going to be difficult to top this.
My general routine was to keep my morning workout at the gym (typically six days a week, weights, core work, and a 2.3 mile run on the treadmill). Then in the afternoon I would take myself out on about a five mile run next to Lake Union. Finally, over the weekend I would take myself out on progressively longer runs as I train up for a half-marathon on December 1st. I also tried to do 200 push-ups everyday (which I mostly kept to).
I ended up averaging 7.3 miles and 139 push-ups a day for the month.
I want to give a shout out to the Joe Rogan Podcast for the inspiration to do this and special thanks to my family for tolerating my tired and sober ass this past month. Next step = 13.1 miles at the 50th Anniversary of the Seattle Marathon on December 1st!
My challenge to you… Make yourself a 30 day goal. Accomplish it. Flex that badassery.
Tell us here at Dunce Cap Games what your challenge is and we would be happy to keep you accountable.
I am really looking forward to some drinks tonight to celebrate. I will be at The Mercury with a wicked Dia De Los Muertos costume, come join me!
Be strong,
Kyle
