Great Family Games for Thanksgiving Weekend

Winter’s best long weekend is quickly approaching and with it the promise of roasted turkey legs, football and pumpkin pie, crisp outside air and lots of rest. Better than that, we hope, is time with family, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles & cousins, nieces and…well, you get the point. Catching up on life while avoiding aunt Sally’s gelatin surprise casserole. Eating so much you wish you’d worn sweat pants.

However, if the conversation dwindles or you can’t hear another one of uncle Rico’s “when I was young” stories, here are some great family games to pass the time you can be prepared with:

10. Monopoly - relive past and childhood anguish and disgust with relatives, or, relive the glory of watching a family member walk off in rage because you’ve bankrupted them again, after so many years!

9. Trouble/Sorry - Same game here, although we prefer the action of the pop-o-matic bubble dice. Aggravate your opponents by sending them back to start as they just…about…reach…ah!

8. RISK - the strategy board game of diplomacy, conflict and conquest for two to six players. Keep the whole family busy for a good while.

7. Life - From college to career, marriage to babies, live your life vicariously through a cardboard square

6. Scrabble - Four players searching the Googleator to prove or disprove a word is actually a word.

5. UNO Flip - plays like regular UNO except there are two sides to the deck of cards: a “light” side and a “dark” side. ... As always, if you are the first player to get rid of all of your cards in a round, you score points for the cards your opponents are left holding.

4. Apples to Apples - match a red apple card (noun) from your hand to best match the played communal card (an adjective). Cards Against Humanity is the dirty version of this game.

3. Epic Spell Wars - For teenagers and up. With great cartoon art, build funny spells to take out your opponents.

2. Unstable Unicorns - Destruction and unicorns, the meaning of Thanksgiving. Betray family and friends to be the first to build an army of seven unicorns.

1. ComPetAbility - A shameless plug! Dunce Cap Games’ first kid’s game, ComPetAbility is a pet matching game for kids of all ages. Think gin rummy, but with animal character cards. Match five and win the round, and the points!

Bonus: Soup2Nuts - Yes, another shameless plug! DCG’s first production, a party game for immature adults! After the kids go to bed, break this out and learn more about your family and friends than you ever wanted to know…maybe more about yourself!
